Description:
Painted in Nice. There is a photograph showing Matisse drawing a huge sketch of this on a wall of canvas panels using charcoal mounted on a long bamboo pole. He would then surround the figures with cutout pieces of paper, making adjustments until the paper was replaced with paint. This was for a commission for a mural to decorate the main hall of the Barnes Foundation in Merion Station, PA. The proposed site, calling for three lunettes above glazed doors leading on to a garden, was extremely awkward, which led to his new method of working. As he was completing Dance I, he realized he had been given the wrong measurements, and created Dance II (Barnes Foundation). This work is a small grisaille study for Dance I (now in Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris). (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
