Description:
A plaster cast (20th century, by Bruno Parizat) from the original commission of 1478 by René I, Duke of Anjou to Francesco Laurana, to adorn the high altar of the church of the convent of the Celestines in Avignon. The polychrome marble altarpiece of exceptional size has resided since 1850 at the Saint-Didier church. It is one of the oldest works of the Provençal Renaissance. The work is similar to the triumphal arch of Castel Nuovo in Naples. The bas-relief cityscape which serves as a backdrop to the scene offers a catalog of Renaissance architecture then unknown in Provence.
