Description:
Picasso rarely employed stone but used carving techniques for both plaster and clay. This piece resembles a wood carving, which he had done very early (ca. 1906) in his career. He worked in clay particularly after 1947, when he began to use the Madoura potteries in Vallauris. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/)
