Description:
|
In this larger-than-life-size head, the face is surmounted by a complicated hairdo with twisted locks gathered at the top and kept in place by a sort of pad. The piece was bought by Ludwig Pollak for the Barracco collection. Doubts as to its authenticity were raised as soon as it appeared in the antiquities market. Recent studies have confirmed the doubts, recognizing the sculpture as a high-quality modern work inspired by models in the style of Pergamum.
