Description:
Marcus Nonius Balbus, born in Nuceria in late Republican times, was an important benefactor in Herculaneum. He was praetor, consul, and proconsule of the provinces of Crete and Cyrene. He became a tribune in 32 BCE, and was a backer of Octavian in the civil wars. His generosity to Herculaneum is preserved in inscriptions reporting his donations and for funding the basilica. For this he was made patron of the city. At least ten statues to Balbus existed in Herculaneum; this was found in the forum area. This statue is one of two equestrian statues; instead of father and son, they are believed to represent the same person at different ages; this statue was donated by the town of Nuceria. The "elder" statue was donated by the town of Herculaneum. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
