Description:
Fresco from Stabiae. This fresco is almost identical to the fine mosaic signed by Dioskourides of Samos from the Villa of Cicero, Pompeii, ca. 150-125 BCE. (Naples Museum inv. 9985). The scene is probably taken from a comedy by Menander entitled "Theophorumene", The Possessed Woman, of which only a few verses survive. That scene was in turn copied from an Alexandrine original of the third century BCE. The figures are playing musical instruments often connected with the cult of Cybele; the tambourine, small cymbals and the double flute.
