Description:
Associated with Cubism (Picasso) and Surrealism in Paris (Arp, Giacometti, Miro), Gonzalez is the founder of modern iron sculpture. From 1928 to 1931, this ironworker and goldsmith brought technical solutions to the works of his compatriot Picasso who, admiring his dexterity, says of him: "he works the metal like a mound of butter". This hybrid sculpture, half vegetable, half human, shows a humanity anguished and suffering after the end of the Spanish Civil War. The protruding spikes recall the Nkisi Nkondi figures from the Congo, bristling with nails. Cast at the foundry, Fonte C. Valsuani, Paris.
