Description:
|
Part of the exhibition "Henri Matisse, a Palette of Objects" (25 June-24 September 2016). The museum has collected many of the actual objects that Matisse surrounded himself with and used in his artwork, and the exhibit juxtaposed these objects with the artwork. This work is a preliminary under-drawing using black oil paint on canvas. Matisse owned little statues and faces from the Cyclades, Greek and Roman busts from Antiquity, as well as small plaster copies of Michelangelo's Slaves, which he juxtaposed with everyday indoor items, creating interactions between different shapes and colors, with neither taking precedence over the other.
