Description:
|
The Bull is a series of 11 lithographs created between December 1945 and January of 1946, that famously depict the beast in various stages of abstraction. All pulled from a single stone, it is a one investigation on the true 'spirit' of the animal; in this case 'the spirit' is equal to the form. The suite of lithographs is a master class in how to develop an artwork from the academic to the abstract. This series vividly demonstrates the kind of experimentation with lithography that Picasso undertook at the Mourlot print workshop in Paris after World War II. This is the eight state of the series, artist's proof, pulled by Mourlot. (Source: MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) [website]; http://www.moma.org/)
