Description:
Donatello’s first monumental work, the seated Saint John the Evangelist was commissioned by the Opera del Duomo in mid-December 1408 (installed 1415) for a position of great visibility, one of four niches to the right and left of the main door of the Duomo. Niccolò di Piero Lamberti was given a commission for St. Mark at the same time. The new exhibit reconstruction of the facade allows the sculptures to be seen as elevated, about 9 feet from the ground, as they would have been originally. These works were an attempt to "modernize" the older facade and sculpture, and were among the last added before the facade was dismantled in 1587, and the sculptures moved to a museum.
