REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The accession sheet indicates linen as the material, although this is not the usual "tampan" fiber. This composition is somewhat similar to Gittinger 1972:Plate 22 and to X76.1409. Gittinger interprets Plate 22 as human figures riding on the backs of animals with the animals' heads confronting a structure containing human figures. Human figures in archtectural forms line the baseline. X76.1409 may be a further stylization of this composition. If this "tampan" also derives from Gittinger's Plate 22, further stylization is evident with the animal forms now virtually unrecognizable [Gittinger 1972:103-106, Plate 22]. See entry for X76.1365 for background information on "tampan" and "pelepai" textiles from Lampung, Sumatra.
