REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: "Selimut" or man's hip or shoulder wrap. Consists of three panels sewn together. Commercial thread; commercial dye. Two color ikat work, which is unusual for Timor. Thread count: warp 56 e.p.i. (double yarn); weft 28 e.p.i. For a general discussion of Atoni weaving, see Schulte Nordholt 1971:41-46. This style (striped lateral panels with ikat center panel) is the most common style of Atoni "selimut". The brightly colored stripes are a long-standing feature of Atoni cloths. See Schulte Nordhold 1971:plate 12 for a photo of a similar cloth being woven; see Gittinger 1979:174 for a photo of Timorese men wearing this type of cloth. In addition to serving as clothing, cloths on Timor traditionally played an important part in exchange cycles among allied kin groups, particularly at weddings and funerals [Gittinger 1979:21-22; for a detailed analysis of a typical Timorese alliance exchange system, see Forman 1980:155-177]. See Gittinger 1979:22 for a photo of this style of cloth in use at a funeral. This style of "selimut", with the three-color ikat center panel, is typical of cloths from the Amanuban Subdistrict; South Central Timor District. Similar cloths were examined in the field in 1987 in the town of Soe, Amanuban.
