REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of three panels sewn together. Purchased new from a local trader in the weekly market in Wolowaru town, the capital and main market center of Wolowaru Subdistrict. An example of a sarong with mixed chemical and natural dyes; the blue is natural indigo but the red is from chemical dyes. This sarong represents the highest quality that would ordinarily be found for sale in the market. Finer sarongs with all natural dyes are made primarily for personal use or exchange with relatives. The vast majority of market sarongs in this subdistrict, on the other hand, are now made with synthetic fiber yarns and entirely chemical dyes (see X88.1265 for an example). The style of this sarong is "lawo nepa mite". "Nepa" refers to the pattern; "mite" (=black) is the color of the major motif bands. X88.1266 and X88.1273 are examples of the yellow color version of this pattern, called "lawo nepa te'a". "Nepa" pattern sarongs are common in Wolowaru Subdistrict, being one of the most distinctive and characteristic Lio patterns.
