REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of three panels sewn together by hand. An example of a Lio style of sarong made in Onelako, where most sarongs are made in Ende styles even though the population is Lio. Field collected; purchased in the home of the weaver. Said by its owners to have been made in about 1966. This style of sarong is known as "lawo nepa te'a". "Nepa" refers to the particular patterns in the ikat bands; "te'a" is the name of the color yellow. "Lawo nepa" sarongs come in two color versions: "lawo nepa mite" ("mite"=black) and "lawo nepa te'a". For an example of "lawo nepa mite" see X88.1268. These styles are more characteriistic of the Lio style areas in Wolowaru Subdistrict, but were occasionally made in Ndona Subdistrict as well. The greenish stripes in this sarong involve an additional dye process not usually seen in Ende or Lio sarongs. This color is called "mbopo" (see X88.1288D for color sample and description of dye process).
