PERSONAL COMMUNICATION FROM HETTY NOOY-PALM: Late 19th to early 20th century from Tana Toraja depicting a buffalo drawing a plow, the "barre allo" (radiating sun) motif which is also applied on (or a motif of) the wood carving of the "tongkonan" and the rice barns, as is the case with the "pa'bulintong siteba'" motif. The names of the leaf-like motifs are unknown. The motif above the buffalo looks more or less like the cowrie motifs on the Dutch made sarita. Perhaps the latter are a crude copy of the motifs of a sarita of the same type as this one. The sarita depicts a man standing on top of an animal (a cock?). To the left of this composition, the "pisang tanduk" (Indonesian: a horned banana) motif. Origin: probably Sesean (sp?). Drawings of motifs provided by Nooy-Palm on file with RIO.
