Two sections, handsewn together vertically. According to Bill Royer, "Fine royal blanket of the type and quality used as burial shrouds among Sumbanese royalty. This particular blanket is unusual in its free-flowing designs (as opposed to horizontal sections) used as an artistic device to create bands of images and hidden ancestor faces. Purchased by Steven G. Alpert in Kampong Kabaru from Bapak Tungsu Jamu. It was woven by his grandmother, Kuku Yowah, who died in 1957. The central motif, Gandah, one of the royal patterns of the Raja of Rende, is flanked by ... dragons, eagles, deer, snakes, birds, etc. meeting to form almost hidden faces of the ancestors...Provenen ce: Kamong kabaru, Rende, Sumba Island, Indonesia."
