REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of two panels sewn together warpwise. Textile end finished with a row of twining; warp fringe tied in some places with strips of plant fiber. Commercial(?) cotton thread. Probably natural and commercial dyes. Thread count: warp 100 e.p.i.; weft 28 e.p.i. From the Ende region, centered on the town of Ende on the south coast of central Flores. A common motif configuration for Endenese cloths; see illustrations in Kahlenberg 1977:20 and Kahn Majlis 1984:plate 372. For a general discussion of the distribution of Florinese textile styles, see Maxwell 1980:141-154. The following information is taken from the original accession material provided by Kent Watters: Early 20th Century; ceremonial shawl; worn by village elders or headmen ("musalaki") as symbol of rank and status.
