REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Consists of four panels sewn together warpwise. Would once have been sewn closed together at the selvages to form a tube; when worn, the warp would then run horizontally across the body of the wearer. Florinese woman traditionally wore a single garment, wrapped high over the breasts; this accounts for the long length of the sarong. On this cloth, the seam has been opened and the edges hemmed. Commercial(?) cotton thread. Probably natural dyes; indigo for blue, Morinda citrifolia for red-brown, and overdyeing of these two dyes for black. Thread count: warp 88 e.p.i.; weft 26 e.p.i. From the Lio domain in east central Flores, centered around the town of Wolowaru. According to the original accession information from Kent Watters: Mid 20th Century (circa 1940-1950); "Lavo Pundi" is the name of the major motif, which runs in bands vertically (weftwise) as the sarong is worn. For a discussion of Lio sarongs, see Watters 1977:88. For an illustration of a cloth with similar configuration but a slightly different motif, see Gittinger 1979:171. For a general discussion of the distribution of Florinese weaving styles, see Maxwell 1980:141-154.
