REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: The human figures seem closely related in style to the "wayang" or shadow puppet figures found on Java. These particular figures may be associated with those Gittinger characterizes by a large mouth with teeth, which she believes represents an old style [Gittinger 1972:160-162]. The animal forms, with their horns, may represent a bovine species [Gittinger 1972:171]. The animal elements seem to act as conveyances in transition rites, as well as signs of wealth and prestige [Gittinger 1972:173-174]. See entry for X76.1365 for background information on "tampan" and "pelepai" textiles from Lampung, Sumatra.
