REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Single panel of cloth with one section decorated with supplementary weft metallic threads, a technique known as "songket". This section resembles a "kepala" [Malay = "head", a section of contrasting pattern that runs vertically down a sarong as it is worn], perhaps indicating that this cloth was intended for wear as a sarong. However, the same collection includes a number of similar pieces that clearly are non-traditional in function and are not intended for wear, casting doubt on the function of this cloth. It is possible that the entire group represents modern styles of commercialized cloth production dating from the 1930s. This cloth is extremely wide for a single panel, indicating the use of a more modern type of loom, perhaps with a discontinuous warp.
