REMARKS BY ROY HAMILTON (1988): Constructed of three panels sewn together by hand. Commissioned together with X88.1256 in Barai Hamlet. Made by a group of three weavers consisting of Habiba Haji Bah' Udin, No'o Rene Usman Moh. Saleh, and Siti Hadjiji Moh. Gani. The dark color is natural indigo but the red and yellow are from chemical dyes. The name of this syle of sarong is "zawo zombo zima", which refers to the five vertical borders (one on each side and three internal) which divide the centerfield into five narrow vertical sections. The box-like motif is called "kaju tiga". The boxes are filled with tiny shapes called "mbeze aze" (wing of a fly), "gami zima" (a diamond) and "mboko besi" (squash seed).
