REMARKS COMPILED IN 1987 BY ROY HAMILTON ON BASIS OF EXISTING RECORDS, EXAMINATION OF OBJECT, AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE: Figural style associated with "wayang" or shadow puppet figures found on Java, with profile head, frontal square shoulders, attenuated torso, bent arms and costume details. Two central figures in upper row hold "kris"; four figures below hold possible emblems of rank [Gittinger 1972:160, Plate 105]. The large birds with projecting crest feathers and vertically rising tail feathers ending in diamond motifs represent male peacocks [Gittinger 1972:100-101, 167, Plates 14-16]. See Gittinger 1972:133-137 for description of marine life. European vessel is unusual [Gittinger 1972:133-137]. See entry for X76.1365 for background information on "tampan" and "pelepai" textiles from Lampung, Sumatra.
