|
Description:
|
The Children's Portico on the south side of the Pratt Institute Library: "Relocated from the south side of the Pratt Library to permit the 1982 Library renovation and extension. The complete portico was an accurate translation of the 12th century Norman porch and staircase at King's School, Canterbury Cathedral. The portico has been admired, fondly and reverently photographed, drawn and rendered since its construction in 1912. Known as "The Children's Porch," it gave entry to the children's library and reading room of the Pratt Institute Free Library, the first in the history of the public library service in this country" [from plaque on the structure, ca. 1982]. Keywords: Porches, Architecture, Universities and colleges.
