Authors Purdy, John, Whittle, J.
Full Title A Map Of Cabotia, Comprehending The Provinces Of Upper And Lower Canada, New-Brunswick, And Nova-Scotia, With Breton Island, Newfoundland, &c. And Including also The Adjacent Parts Of The United States. Compiled from a great Variety of Original Documents, By John Purdy. Published 12th October, 1814, by Jas. Whittle And Richd. Holmes Laurie, No. 53, Fleet Street, London. Engraved by Thomson & Hall, 14, Bury Str. Bloomsby. (with 10 inset maps).
Note First edition. Large, four sectioned map in original case, each sheet is dissected into 16 sections). Ten inset maps. Editions to 1850. A large, impressive map, with a unique title indicating Purdy's attempt to create a new name for the region discovered by Cabot, and/or an attempt by Laurie and Whittle to sell more maps (see Fredonia map of 1833). The main organizing feature of the map is the drainage of the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes. The inset maps are very detailed and several notes discuss Cabot's explorations. Tanner mentions this map as a source in his preface to the American Atlas, as does Melish in his Geographical Description of the United States. Stevens and Tree list editions of 1814, 1821, and 1821/25, Winearls adds editions of 1828 (May), 1828 (June), 1838, and 1850. With outline color. Folds into original marbled cardboard slip case 21x16.5 with a label reading "Cabotia. Jo Gratz" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen, 32 Dame Strt." printed in ink.

Full Title Williams' Copper - Plate Map Of The United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, West Indies, &c. Published by John M. Atwood, 402 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Printed by F. Bourquin, 31 So. 6th Street, Phila. Copyright 1876 by G. Washington Williams.
Note Related to Williams' New Nat. Map for Mitchell. Compare to 1857 and 1860 Mitchell New National Map exhibiting the United States... We assume that this Williams is the son of Wellington Williams and that he took over his father's map and reissued it. It is interesting to see that John M. Atwood published this map - it appears that he not only published maps, but also drew them for others, i.e. Colton and Ensign & Thayer. Inset maps include: Island Of Newfoundland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut, The Atlantic Ocean Showing The Communications By Cable And Steam Between Europe And The United States, Is. Of Porto Rico, Virgin Is. And S. Cruz, Islands Of Japan ..., Map Of The Great Pacific Ocean With It's Shores And Islands, Alaska, and The Sandwich Islands Or Hawaiian Group. Full color by state. Map is dissected into 36 sections and folds into a new green cloth folding case 29x29 with "United States, Canada, Mexico &c. G.W. Williams 1876" stamped in gilt on the spine. Note This issue incorporates the Lewis and Clark discoveries (and other discoveries) and remaps the entire continent west of the Mississippi. The changes between this and the last edition (1811) are monumental. This copy is from the collection of Sir Charles Broke (or Brooke, subsequently Vere). Broke was in Lower Canada with his regiment, the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, which was at the battle of Plattsburg in 1814. Later, he was with the Army of Occupation in France, receiving the Waterloo medal despite arriving from Canada too late for the battle (from Manasek). Without color. Dissected into 40 sections and mounted on linen. Folds into a new gray cloth covered box case 29x22x7 with "North America A. Arrowsmith 1814" stamped on the spine in gold.

Authors Kensett, T., Shelton, W.
Full Title A Map of the United States and British Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada with other parts adjacent By Shelton & Kensett ... (above the title) To The President The Senators and Representatives of the United States This Map Of The United States Of America Is most Respectfully Dedicated by Shelton & Kensett 1816. Entered According ... October 1st, 1816 ... Connecticut. Projected by Thomas Kensett. A. Doolittle Sc.
Note Large map of the United States based on the Arrowsmith/Tardieu maps of the same period, with a similar "Falls of Niagara" cartouche. Engraved by Amos Doolittle. Interestingly, credit for the cartouche is given to Tardieu, who copied it from Arrowsmith (perhaps evidence of a prejudice against the British from the War of 1812?). This map is far superior to either the Arrowsmith or Tardieu maps: in the west it incorporates both of Pike's maps of the Upper Mississippi and the western tributaries of the Mississippi and the Missouri, east of the Mississippi, it uses much from the Bradley "Postal" map of the United States of 1804/1812, including public survey lines, county formations, township boundaries, roads, etc. There are two very interesting inset maps and a commentary on ancient fortifications along the Ohio River. This highly detailed and accurate map must be one of the best of its period. Outline color by states. Maps is dissected into 35 sections and folds into marbled paper end sheet, then into a new gray cloth folding case 28x23 with "United States Shelton And Kensett 1816" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note We believe this is Lucas' largest separate map of Baltimore. Papenfuse illustrates editions of 1822, 1836 and 1841. This 1852 issue may be the last (Ristow). It is interesting to note that the copyright has been renewed to 1852, indicating that Lucas was still active as a map publisher. Full color. Note Watermark, J. Whatman 1811, NE sheet, lower left. Comparing to 79(d), 1804, I cannot find the changes indicated by Stevens, and comparing to 79(f), which only has added "-1815" in ms, I cannot find any changes either. It could be that this copy of 79(e) is later than the one Stevens saw as indicated by the 1811 watermark. There may be a 79(e) without the 1811 watermakr that is earlier. Outline color by state. Full Title A Map Of The United States of North America Drawn from a number of Critical Researches By A. Arrowsmith, Geographer, Charles Street, Soho Square. London. Published as the Act Directs by A. Arrowsmith, Charles Street, Soho Square. Jany. 1st, 1796. Boundaries Communicated by Geo. Chalmers Esqr. ...
Note 1st edition, 1st issue - "Tennassee Government." Many changes from the later 1808/1811 issue - the Great Lakes and the upper Mississippi are drawn very preliminarily and inaccurately, very few roads are shown throughout, there is a long note in the lower left corner about the boundaries of Georgia, parts of Maine and Canada are blank or inaccurately drawn, and Georgia and Tennessee have much less detail. Only the title sheet that shows the Carolinas and Virginia is about the same, except for fewer roads. As geographical knowledge increased about the parts north and west, Arrowsmith filled in this map. Outline color by state. In two sheets, each dissected into 16 sections and backed with linen. Folds into original tan marbled slip case 32x19 with a paste down label reading "North America. Date 1796" in ms, and "Sold by Wm. Allen 32 Dame Strt." printed in black ink.

Full Title A Map of the United States of North America Drawn from a number of Critical Researches ... Additions to 1819 (Western two sheets only). London, Published by A. Arrowsmith, No. 10 Soho Square Jan 1st 1796.
Note Lacking the two eastern sheets which include the title. This issue is earlier slightly than our complete 1819 edition (Stevens 79 (i)) with less development shown in the area around the junction of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers, which were settling up rapidly at that time (see David Thomas "Travels Through The Western Country"). However, it has the northern and (most of) the southern flaps which place it later than Stevens 79 (h). So it is probably an unrecorded state of the map. Map has light blue silk edging, is dissected into 25 sections, and folds into a new blue cloth folding case 26x17 with "United States A. Arrowsmith 1819" stamped in gilt on the spine.

Note This is the first year that Colton published this map. Iowa is now fully developed with counties, and there is major railroad growth in Indiana and Illinois, among other changes from the 1850 edition. This is probably the late 1852 issue - Karrow 1-1578 is the same map without Colton's name in the title, indicating that Colton took over publishing the map later in the year. Full color by county. Map is dissected into 36 sections, mounted on linen. Folds into marbled end sheets and a new black cloth folding case 36x30 with "Colton's Map Of The United States J. Worret, Charles, Kayser, G.
Military Map of a part of Eastn. Virginia.
1863
Case Map
Authors Worret, Charles, Kayser, G.
Full Title Military Map of a part of Eastn. Virginia Department of Maj: Genl: J.A. Dix Comdg 7th Army Corps completed from several Military Reconnaissances & Surveys under the Direction of Capt: Wm. Heine Topt. Engr. U.S. drawn & compiled by Lieut. Ch. Worret & G. Kayser Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret.
Note This immense, large scale map at first appears to be manuscript, entirely hand drawn. Dissected into 35 sections and mounted on linen. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a lithograph of a hand drawn field map, with several large sections filled in or corrected in manuscript and with the waterways colored blue. It is centered on the area around Suffolk, Virginia, extending north and east to Fort Monroe, Hampton Roads and Norfolk, west to Franklin, Zuni and the Blackwater River, and south to about nine miles south of the North Carolina border. It was probably hand drawn and lithographed for immediate field use (note the title says "Traced by Lieut. Ch. Worret") with a very small press run, and corrected and updated as needed. There is a great deal of local information shown: the names of all property owners and their farms and buildings, railroads, rivers and small streams, the large Dismal Swamp, fortifications, roads and paths and distances thereon, "old Rebl. camp," "Rebl camp," "Marmaduke Ellis (Deserter)," "Negroes," and more. A "Note" at the top right corner gives the sources of the map: "Coast lines by U.S. Coast Survey" and then a list of surveys by Maj Wetterall, Maj. Stratton, 1st Lieut. James, 1st Lieut. Ch. Worrett, Lt. Soederquist, and Geo. Kayser, that were used in the construct of this map. Below the Note is the manuscript signature of "Lieut. James Ch Engr. Suffolk" and a manuscript presentation of the map "To Brig. Gen Terry with compliments of 1st Lt. C.H. James Act. Chief Engineer Maj. Gen Pecks Staff." We have dated the map (1863) based on the Soederquist Map of Suffolk & vicinity (Stephenson 661) which Stephenson dates (1863). Soederquist's map is on the same scale as this map, and is most likely a companion map to the Soederquist map of Norfolk & Vicinity that is listed in the "Note" as a source for this map.
