Full Title General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia, Extending from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean and Between Latitude 39 degrees and 53 degrees North. Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines, and Including the Most Recent Surveys of the Topographical Bureau. Prepared by Captain John Mullan. ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E. Lithographed by J. Bien, 24 Vesey, St. N.Y.
Note Mullan/Freyhold map, titled "General Map of the North Pacific States and Territories Belonging to the United States and of British Columbia ... Exhibiting Mail Routes, Gold Mines ... Drawn by Edward Freyhold, T.E." Strange Owyhee depiction - shows Kearney River and the Jordan Creek flowing into the Owyhee and a road from "Star City" on the Humboldt (which is actually in Buena Vista Valley south of the Humboldt!) going north through the Owyhee to Boise. Map is very incorrect regarding northern Nevada and Southeastern Oregon. Further study needed. Explore the relationship to Williamson's map of 1866. Kearney River comes from the Dixon map of 1860, but Dixon puts the Kearney where Freyhold puts the Jordan. Much detail on the Owyhee Mines in the addenda. Bound with brown linen covered boards with title on the spine.

Note This was the first map to show the results of the expedition of J.B. Trudeau from 1794 to 1796. It is also one of the most important late Eighteenth Century maps showing the Transmississippi West and is highly praised (and illustrated) by Wheat: "an important intermediate cartographic step between Soulard's highly rudimentary showing of the Missouri Basin, and the excellent charts of the river as far as the Mandan Villages drawn by McKay and Evans."

Note First edition. This is the source of Colton's two General Atlas regional maps of the west, beginning with the 1864 atlas edition. This was the first map to show Montana (Wheat). Colton also issued in 1862 (W. Heckrotte copy) "Colton's Map of the Pacific States, California and Oregon...and British Columbia" which is from the same plate, earlier, and goes further north to include much of the Canadian west, but does not go as far east. All these maps derive from "Johnson's New Illustrated & Embellished County Map of the Republics of North America" (see our 1859 edition, #4012) which was first issued in 1856 (We assume this date because our copy says entered in 1856). This shows further that the relationship between Johnson and Colton included Colton using Johnson's maps, as well as Johnson using Colton's maps in Johnson's Family Atlas. Folded into dark green cloth covers 15.5x10 with "Colton's Map Of The States & Territories From The Mississippi River To The Pacific Ocean. &c., &c. J.H. Colton." in gilt. Full color by county.

Authors Fremont, J.C., Preuss, Charles
Full Title Topographical Map Of The Road From Missouri To Oregon, Commencing At The Mouth Of The Kansas In The Missouri River And Ending At The Mouth Of The Wallah Wallah In The Columbia. In VII Sections. Section III. From the field notes and journal of Capt. J.C. Fremont, and from sketches and notes made on the ground by his assistant Charles Preuss. Compiled by Charles Preuss, 1846 By order of the Senate of the United States ... Lithogr. by E. Weber & Co. Baltimore ...
Note Map includes a chart of meteorological observations giving remarks, the temperature reading, and the altitude. From the notes on the map, this appears to have been a difficult stretch of road. No game was found 30 miles each way from Fort Laramie. Grass was scanty as was fuel. It is stated that, "Sioux Indians are not to be trusted." Notes from Fremont's report states that Fort Laramie should be used as an established military post. It would make the whole area safer and could also continue to be a trading post.

Compiled by Charles Preuss, 1846 By order of the Senate of the United States ... Lithogr. by E. Weber & Co. Baltimore ...
Note This section of the map includes the Wind River Mountains and a discussion of the continental divide by Fremont. In his report Fremont states, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit ... giving 13, 570 feet for the elevation above the Gulf of Mexico. Fields of snow lay far below us: boundless mountains stretched before us. A stillness the most profound, and a terrible solitude, forced themselves constantly on the mind as the great features of this place." This section traverses the war ground of the Indians, and so it is noted that guards and watches should be in place.

Note Notes in this section include a mention of the Great Salt Lake as "one of the wonders of nature, and perhaps without a rival in the world..." The travelers were now out of danger from the Indians as the Snake Indians were considered to be friendly.

Note This map contains the largest amount of written data. Copious notes are included from October 10th through October 25th. The last note tells about the first sighting of the Columbia River. Fremont notes that the distance from the mouth of the Kansas to "this place" is about 2,000 miles. Note This was the best general map of the American West published by the Topographical Engineers until the Emory and Warren maps of 1857. Wheat calls it "beautiful... a synthesis of the many and varied cartographic activities of the U.S. Army carried on in the West since the onset of the Mexican War, with numerous individual maps subjected to correction and enhanced by new data." A large and imposing production, the map shows the new political divisions of California, Utah and New Mexico and is engraved in the best style by the well known Sherman and Smith firm of New York. Map is without color.

Note The first Disturnell edition, and the second Martin edition (after the 1828 White Gallaher and White first edition). Wheat calls this edition a "famous" map. This edition is distinguished by the absence of a trail line running directly from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, that appears on the third Martin edition. Compared to our seventh edition (see our # 2541), there are substantially fewer towns, roads, and physical features both in Mexico and the U.S. The two profiles in the Pacific and two inset maps in the Gulf of Mexico of the 1847 edition are not present. The covers and paste down statistics are the same as our 1847 edition. The map was printed from the same plate as the 1828 White Gallaher and White edition, evidenced by the faint copyright notice in the lower right corner under the neat line, Disturnell made many updates to the 1828 edition, and its republication by him was occasioned by the outbreak of the Mexican War. White Gallaher and White copied and slightly enlarged Henry Tanner's 1826 Map of the United States of Mexico (see our #5176). Martin lists twenty three editions of Disturnell's map. A significant difference between the Disturnell map and the earlier editions by White Gallaher and White, and Tanner, is the moving of the boundary line between Alta and Baja California about 70 miles further north toward San Diego, which was then used as the boundary in the treaty to end the Mexican War. Map is full color, folded into red cloth covers 15x10 with "Mexico." stamped in gold. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Prime meridian: Washington.
