Description:
One of the most popular sculptors with the court and the aristocracy during the reign of Emperor Charles VI was Lorenzo Mattielli (ca. 1682-1748) from Vicenza, who had trained with Orazio Marinali. Mattielli created fine garden sculpture (1719-1724) for the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna and also received numerous ecclesiastical commissions, including the main parts of the sculptural decoration (1725-1726) of the front façade of the Karlskirche in Vienna. He also designed the statues (1731) on the high altar of the church of Melk Abbey. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
Image Description:
Michaelerkirche (St. Michael's Church), dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is one of the oldest churches in Vienna, Austria, and also one of its few remaining Romanesque buildings. The present façade was built in 1792 (during reign of emperor Joseph II) in a Neoclassical style by Ernest Koch.
