Description:
|
The first Apple store to recreate their famous glass spiral staircase 3 stories high. The first glass staircase received a design patent in 2002 and the complex glass and hardware system received a separate technical patent. Apple worked with architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and engineer Eckersley O'Callaghan Structural Design in designing the staircase. This store is a rehab of an existing Art Deco brick building; the design contrasts the early 20th century building shell with a light-filled, modernist interior. The building has a prominent corner location, and its brick facades and steel industrial windows relate to similar neighborhood structures. The exterior's historic brickwork has been extended into the interior. (Source: Bohlin Cywinski Jackson [firm website]; http://www.bcj.com/)
