Description:
Probably in 1353, Andrea di Cione (Orcagna) was commissioned by the del Palagio family to paint a pentaptych (Florence, Accademia) for the altar of the chapel of S Niccolò in SS Annunziata, Florence. (It was later moved to S. Maria Maggiore, and then to the Accademia). While the figures in the pentaptych, like those in earlier works, are rather stocky, they become more slender in his later paintings. Bernard Berenson attributed this work to Andrea's brother, Jacopo di Cione. The saints on the right are John the Baptist and Saint James the Greater; the saint left of center in bishop's garb is Saint Nicholas. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
