Description:
The statue of Saint Matthew, left unfinished, is the only apostle begun by Buonarroti out of a series of 12 commissioned in 1503 for Florence Cathedral. It seems that Michelangelo did not immediately put his hand to the commission, perhaps because he was still committed to sculpt 'David ', which he finished in April 1504. Documents about the cutting of marble blocks for the Apostles date back to 1504 and 1505 (see de Tolnay, 1947). (Source: Galleria dell'Accademia (Florence) [website]; http://www.accademia .org/)
