Description:
Although this is the seventh chronological scene in the life of the Baptist, it was the fourth work (one panel and two of the Virtues were done first) which Del Sarto completed. The colors of the earlier panels are more sepia-toned than later panels and the rendering of the figures becomes progressively more sculptural as the series was executed. The people gathered to hear the Baptist preach are depicted wearing contemporary 16th century Italian clothing.
