Description:
Del Sarto painted the whole of the entrance wall in 1523; the Feast of Herod, Hope, Faith and the Annunciation to Zacharias. The scene depicts the end of the story, after Salome has danced and Herodias has demanded the head of the Baptist from Herod Antipas. From the Gospel of Matthew: "And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother."
