The autograph Annunciation opposite the head of the staircase leading from the ground-floor is the first image to greet the visitor on entering the most private area of the complex. In the 15th century only Dominican and Franciscan friars were permitted to enter the Order’s dormitories. It was the custom for Dominicans to greet the Virgin with the angelic salutation (Hail Mary) on entering the dormitory, and as this was done while genuflecting--just as the Angel Gabriel does in the Annunciation--Fra Angelico’s painting forged an indissoluble link between the image and its beholder.
