Description:
During his 14 years at Prato, Lippi also painted many panels. On 8 August 1452 he promised to complete a tondo for Leonardo di Bartolommeo Bartolini by 8 December, but it was still unfinished by 16 April 1453. This is identifiable with the Virgin and Child with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin (Florence, Pitti). It is the first painted image of the Virgin in Florentine art to appear on a tondo, a form hitherto associated with the decorative trays known as deschi da parto. The background composition recalls Ghiberti’s Jacob and Esau panel from the Gates of Paradise. Restored in 1981. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
