Description:
|
Agnolo was born and died in Florence, and was the son of the painter Taddeo Gaddi. As the head of a successful workshop, determining Agnolo’s genuine production remains matters of scholarly discussion. This panel was part of a dismembered polyptych, perhaps the one that Agnolo painted for San Miniato al Monte. At the Uffizi since 1860. Despite it's small size, the panel is crammed with figures including the two thieves, Longinus, the "swoon of the Virgin", Mary Magdalene and John the Apostle at the foot of the cross, and soldiers casting lots for Christ's robe on the right.
