Description:
|
These figures, isolated on the wall with flying drapery, are similar to the four Third Style frescoes inspired by fourth century BCE figures depicting Leda, Flora (inv. 8834, both on a green background), and Diana, Medea (both on a blue background) on panels situated in the middle zone of the walls of a cubiculum of the Villa Arianna, Stabiae (4.5 km southwest of Pompeii). All are painted with light colors over a darker colored background, as is this. With their garments blown up by the wind, Ariadne goes down from the sky with her divine bridegroom, Dionysys, his head crowned by a little crown and his typical staff, or thyrsus, in his left hand, on a black background.
