Description:
|
A Roman mosaic in two registers; in the top a cat bites a partridge, in the lower register there are two ducks with flower buds and an assortment of small birds, fish and shell fish. The animals are all highly detailed and accurately depicted; the species can be identified. The duck on the left is a male Eurasian Teal, on the right a Common Shelduck. The mosaic is from the House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) (VI.12.2.30). The House of the Faun is the most complete example of a luxury villa of the aristocracy of the Late Republican period.
