Description:
|
Benvenuto Tisi (or Il Garofalo) worked in the court in Ferrara. It is possible that Garofalo went to Rome, since his works after 1513 clearly display a familiarity with the new classicism of Raphael. This new element was to form the basis of Garofalo’s output over a long period; he produced a vast number of altarpieces for the main churches in Ferrara. The presence of two Franciscan Saints and the pose of the Madonna probably allude to the thesis of absence of original sin in the Virgin (Immaculate Conception); this was promoted by the Franciscan order.
