Around 20 BCE there began to be a reaction against the illusionistic tricks of the Second Style. Buildings are still depicted in the Farnesina House in Rome, commissioned ca. 25-20 BCE by the general Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, but they are increasingly attenuated and accompanied by new painted motifs: candelabra, a profusion of decorative stripes, and Egyptianizing motifs. The ancient villa was discovered under the grounds of the present Villa Farnesina in Trastevere in 1879, during maintenance works on the banks of the Tiber. In the exhibition space of Palazzo Massimo the restored frescoes have been recomposed within rooms of the original dimensions. This is one of two cubicula with vermillion red walls (made from cinnabar). The decorative scheme of both involves Aphrodite and Dionysus. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
