Description:
|
This bust of a young woman can be identified as the poet Sappho (612-580 BCE) on the basis of her hairstyle, compared to other ancient inscribed versions. This replica may have been produced in the 16th or 18th centuries, possibly reworking and polishing an ancient work. From the Kircherian Museum, archaeologic works assembled by the antiquarian and Jesuit priest, Athanasius Kircher, the initial core collection of the Museo Nazionale Romano.
