Description:

The four Roman racing companies or stables (factiones) were known by the racing colors worn by their charioteers (aurigae); these four panels (emblemata from a floor mosaic) of the Severan period depict a charioteer and horse from each of the stables, red (russata), white (albata), blue (veneta), and green (prasina). They would have raced in the Circus Maximus. The four mosaic sections are from a bedroom in a villa found in Baccano (Baccanae) on Via Cassia near Rome probably belonging to the imperial Severan family.
