Description:
The oeuvre of this artist was formerly attributed to two people with the same name, but modern scholarship maintains that all work is by the same person, who, during one phase of his career while living in Rome in the 1620s, painted nocturnal, candlelit, half-length figures in the manner of Caravaggio. He is best known for works produced in Arles and Aix-en-Provence, characterized by a softer chiaroscuro. English art historian Benedict Nicolson was the first to propose that he was identical with the artist called Maître à la chandelle (Candlelight Master). There are four versions of this painting in various museums. (Source: Union List of Artist Names [online notes]; http://www.getty.edu /research/conducting _research/vocabulari es/ulan)
