Description:
The leading altar painter in Italy in the second half of the 16th century, Barocci enjoyed a greater popularity and exerted a more profound influence on the art of his time than any of his contemporaries. Even in his smaller canvasses which were painted for private chapels or collectors, Barocci abandoned the often cold calligraphy of the Mannerists. Instead, he favoured delicate images, rosy colours, soft light, and landscape settings, influenced by the work of Correggio. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
