Description:
Colossal head of Roman emperor Claudius (reworked from a bust of emperor Caligula), circa 50 CE. It was found in the ruins of the Basilica of Ocriculum (modern Otricoli), 1779 (and restored in 1779 by Gaspare Sibilla). Claudius (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus,10 BCE -54 CE) was Roman emperor from 41 to 54 CE. He was the uncle and successor of Caligula, emperor from 37-41 CE.
