In May 1425 Gentile completed a polyptych (now dispersed) commissioned by the Quaratesi family for the high altar of S Niccolò sopr’Arno that consisted of a Virgin and Child with Angels (London, N.G.), SS Mary Magdalene, Nicholas, John the Baptist, and George (Florence, Uffizi) and five predella panels (four in Rome, Vatican, Pin., one in Washington, DC, N.G.A.). This is one of the four predella panels in the Vatican Museums, all with scenes of the life of St. Nicholas. Vasari considered this altarpiece to be the best work by Gentile that he had seen, and it served as a model for Fra Angelico and Domenico Veneziano as well as Bicci di Lorenzo and other minor masters.
