Description:
|
Raphael conceived the fresco decoration of the entrance loggia ceiling, which suggests an illusion of an open garden pergola with faux tapestries of the Council of the Gods and the Wedding Banquet of Cupid and Psyche (ca. 1517-1518) suspended overhead. In the side vaults are scenes from the legend of Psyche (taken from Golden Ass of Apuleius, 2nd century CE) and representations of amoretti holding emblems of the gods; Raphael probably also intended that the lunettes of the loggia be frescoed. The execution was left largely to pupils, with various portions attributed to Giulio Romano (spandrels), Giovanni da Udine (the plant festoons and birds), Raffaello dal Colle and Giovanni Francesco Penni.
