Description:
Second century CE Roman copy from the original by Lysippus (active 370-300 BCE). The sculpture was discovered during the reconstruction of the Church of Sant'Agnese. The sculptor Alessandro Algardi restored the statue. He probably modified the original iconography of Hercules taming the hind (deer) of Ceryneia to the more exciting iconography of Hercules killing the Hydra. At any rate, the work is a Roman reworking of a Greek creation attributed to Lysippus (Lysippos) who, according to ancient sources, sculpted all the labours of Hercules.
