Description:

Cartoon for frescoes designed for the Palazzo Torlonia (Palazzo Bolognetti-Torlonia) , ca. 1830s. When redesigning Piazza Venezia, the building was demolished in 1902-1903; some frescoes were removed and saved, others were auctioned off, some exist only as cartoons. Before destruction, works in the palace were photographed. The Museum of Rome at Palazzo Braschi preserves surviving frescoes, cartoons and some of the photographs (others are at the Pinacoteca Podesti). Podesti had little interest in classical subjects as themes and rendered them only as part of decorative frescowork, as in this commission for Alessandro Torlonia (1800-1886), one of his earliest patrons.
