Description:
Depicts the "Joust of Carousels" which took place in honor of Queen Christina of Sweden on the night of February 28, 1656, in the riding courtyard of the Palazzo Barberini. The grandiose construction, which cost seven thousand crowns, even required the demolition of some adjacent houses to create the box seats for the papal court. The pageant consisted of a complex mythological allegory, played by characters dressed in colorful costumes, parading on triumphant chariots and horses with rich trappings. Gagliardi (who was also an architect) painted the architecture and Lauri painted the figures. (Source: Museo di Roma (Palazzo Braschi) [website]; http://en.museodirom a.it/)
