The fresco paintings of Pietro Gagliardi (1809-1890) represent the last era of the Roman school dominated by the Papacy before the accession of King Umberto I (reigned 1878-1900). During his long and productive career, he worked in a style that had been initially influenced by Neo-classicism but, modified by Purismo and the taste for Romantic subject-matter, later oscillated between academicism and Romanticism. This mural was done for the Palazzo Torlonia (Palazzo Bolognetti-Torlonia) . When redesigning Piazza Venezia, the building was demolished in 1902-1903; some frescoes were removed and saved and are in the Palazzo Braschi collection.
