Description:
|
Giovanni Battista Rospigliosi (1646-1722) acquired the dukedom of Zagarolo, near Rome, from the Ludovisi family in 1668. Camillo Rospigliosi, Duke of Zagarolo (1714-1769), was a notable patron of equestrian portraits and genre paintings, many of which were bought up by the Museo di Roma in 1932. One of the great passions of Camillo Rospigliosi was breeding horses. The painting celebrates the ability of Camillo, seen riding in the left background, in the management of the family estates and its successes in farming. Bottom left, on the stone, an inscription alludes to the stallion who had fathered the three beautiful horses in the foreground. In the background the view details the small town of Zagarolo and agricultural activities in the countryside. (Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordart online.com/)
